Battlefields from WW I and WW II

This arrangement is an extended combination of the tours "1944 - Operation Market Garden" and "Battlefields WW I – Ypres"

A 3 day–excursion that takes you back to major events from both wars. With a qualified historian as your personal guide you will gain insight into the causes and consequences of the operations and you will also get an idea of what life was like for the soldiers involved in combat.

Day 1 - Ypres and surroundings

We leave early for Ypres and surroundings. This excursion is dealing with the battles over there during "The Great War". This was the first modern war with the use of planes, tanks, gas attacks etc. Military strategy was not ready for these options which led to a massacre amongst soldiers on both sides of the front line. This front line in Belgium and France stayed nearly at the same place for 4 years ( for other info see the webpage "Battlefields WW I – Ypres").

Day 2 -Ypres and surroundings

This day the programme focuses on the section north and east from Ypres: Polygoon Wood trenches, Tyne Cot cemetery, Passchendaele, Langemarck cemetery, John McCrea advanced dressing station and the "Trenches of death" at Diksmuide.
Later in the afternoon we'll make the transfer to Lommel in the North-East of Belgium to bring us in the right position for Operation Market Garden. Lommel was the starting point of the British XXX-corps rallying for the Bridge at Arnhem.

Day 3 -1944 Operation Market Garden

This day focuses on the largest airborne operation in history. The aim of the 1944-operation was to conquer a bridge over the river Rhine to gain access to Nazi- Germany. Market Garden would prove to be “a bridge too far” for the joint forces of the English, American and Polish troops ( for other info see the webpage “1944 - Operation Market Garden”).  Starting at Joe’s bridge nearby Lommel, the track from the British XXX-corps (Irish Guards) is followed. Along “Hell’s Highway” we pay attention to drop- and fighting zones 101st US-ABD, drop- and fighting zones 82nd US-ABD, Canadian War cemetery Groesbeek,  drop- and fighting zones 1st British ABD and Polish Independent ABB. Visit to a museum of choice is included.
