Combination
Middle Ages and WW I
This arrangement is a combination of a visit to Bruges and Ypres.
Day 1 - Bruges
We will drive to the medieval town of Bruges. In this town we will have an overnight stay. Bruges, with its canals, is also known as the Venice of the north. In the Middle Ages it was the most important merchant-town of North-Western Europe, therefore it was a desirable town for noble dynasties like the Dukes of Burgundy or the Kings of France to get it under their jurisdiction.
There is no place in this region of Europe where you can better taste the atmosphere of medieval life. Walking through Bruges really means plunging into history.
With a qualified historian as your personal guide, all the highlights of this picturesque town will be shown to you accompanied by vivid, but historically sound information.
This programme is flexible and can be adjusted to your own wishes. For example, we can take time to visit "Groeninge-museum" with its famous 15th and 16th century paintings and the mausoleum of Duchess Mary and Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy.
Dit arrangement is een combinatie van de trips naar Brugge en Ieper.
Day 2 -Ypres and surroundings
We will leave early for Ypres and surroundings. This excursion will be dealing with World War I also known as "The Great War". This was the first modern war with the use of planes, tanks, gas attacks etc. Military strategy was not ready for these options which led to a massacre amongst soldiers on both sides of the front line. This front line in Belgium and France stayed nearly in the same place for 4 years.
The madness of this war will be shown by visiting main sites along the former trenches. You will gain insight into the causes and consequences of the war and you will also get an idea of what life was like for the soldiers involved in the combat.
This day we will visit remaining trenches on the former battleground, huge craters caused by bombardments, military cemeteries and a museum.
At the end of the day we will return to Holland.
